چکیده
N=number of women having triple test; p=prevalence of Down's syndrome; p*N=total number of fetuses with Down's syndrome; DR=detection rate; FPR=false positive rate; p*N*DR*AR=number of women with true positive results who have amniocentesis; (1-p)*N*FPR*AR=number of women with false positive results who have amniocentesis; p*N*DR*AR=number having an abortion (all positive amniocentesis results); TT=cost of triple test per person; Am=cost of amniocentesis; Ab=cost of abortion; AR= amniocentesis acceptance rate. The total cost of avoiding the birth of all detected fetuses with Down's syndrome has three components: the cost of the triple test (TT*N); the cost of amniocentesis in all women with true positive results or false positive results; and the cost of abortion. Total cost =TTF*N+Am*[p*N*DR+(1-p)*N*FPR]*AR +Ab*p*N*DR*AR Average cost =Total cost/Number of births avoided =TT*N+Am*[p*N*DR+(l-p)*N*FPR)]*AR +Ab*p*N*DR*AR p*N*DR*AR =TTr(1/AR) Am*FPR P*DR +Am p*DR +Ab The only term that varies as the acceptance rate (AR) changes is the one on the left. Assuming an acceptance rate of 75% as in table III this term is: TT(l/AR) TT(1/075) TTF(133) PR P * DR p*DR Thus changes in acceptance rate affect the average cost according to the formula given in the text: Change in average cost=(cost per triple test) (1/AR-1-33)/ (prevalence rate) (detection rate).

Derivation and validation of a sensitivity formula for knife-edge slit gamma camera: A theoretical and Monte Carlo simulation study
Introduction: Gamma cameras are proposed for online range verification and treatment monitoring in proton therapy. An Analytical formula was derived and validated for sensitivity of a slit collimator based on the photon fluence concept. Methods: Fluence formulation was generalized for photons distribution function and solved for high-energy point sources. The...
متن کاملCorrelation of Leukocyte Count and Percentage of Segmented Neutrophils with Pathohistological Findings of Appendix in Children
BackgroundAppendicitis is the most common indication for an emergency operation in children's age. Although none of the laboratory values has not high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of appendicitis, leukocyte count and the percentage of segmented neutrophils are most commonly used. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a statistically significant correlation bet...
متن کاملAsymptotic calculation of cause-specific mortality accuracy under random allocation
This appendix accompanies the paper “Measuring causes of death in populations: a new metric that corrects cause-specific mortality fractions for chance” by Flaxman et al, which proposes an approach to chance-correcting the causespecific mortality fraction (CSMF) accuracy used in measuring the predictive accuracy of verbal autopsy analysis methods at the population level. In the main paper, the ...
متن کاملKPZ formula derived from Liouville heat kernel
In this paper, we establish the Knizhnik–Polyakov–Zamolodchikov (KPZ) formula of Liouville quantum gravity, using the heat kernel of Liouville Brownian motion. This derivation of the KPZ formula was first suggested by F. David and M. Bauer in order to get a geometrically more intrinsic way of measuring the dimension of sets in Liouville quantum gravity. We also provide a careful study of the (n...
متن کاملAppendix: Mathematical Derivation and Computational Complexity of the Bayesian Score
In this appendix, we first describe the mathematical derivation of the marginal likelihood of model Mh: P (G|Mh) (Section 2). Then we show four equivalent formulas for solving P (G|Mh) (Section 3). After that, we show how to obtain the marginal likelihood of model Ml from the solution to the marginal likelihood of model Mh (Section 4). Finally, we show that the overall computational complexity ...
متن کاملBayesian Filtering in Spiking Neural Networks: Noise, Adaptation, and Multisensory Integration Online Appendix
As mentioned in the paper, the full derivation of the filtering equation (2.4) is presented in [1]. The derivation in [1] is more general than the context of the paper, and uses very sophisticated mathematical tools. In this appendix we present a simplified outline of this derivation. We are aware that in our particular case of interest, the same results can be derived from discrete-time approx...
